Early Morning Accident Traps Victim Under Car
Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 5:12 a.m. on Sunday, May 10, 2009 to the 128.5 mile marker of Interstate 70 eastbound for a report of an extrication accident.
Fire Fighters arrived and found a red 1998 Pontiac Sunfire on its top in the median. Fire crews discovered two victims, one walking around the vehicle, and another who had been ejected and was trapped underneath the vehicle. Crews used air bags from the Columbia Fire Department's Heavy Rescue Unit to lift the car and free the trapped victim. It took rescue crews approximately 25 minutes to free the trapped victim. Both victims were transported to University Hospital by ambulance; one with critical injuries and one with moderate injuries.
Any media inquiries relating to the accident investigation, or the release of victim's names, should be directed to the Columbia Police Department.
