Kitchen Fire Results in Minor Burns to Occupant

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 1:09 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 to 3801 Oakland Gravel Road for a report of a structure fire.

Fire Fighters arrived and discovered the remnants of a fire, which had been extinguished by the occupant with a portable fire extinguisher, prior to the arrival of fire crews.  Crews ensured the fire was completely extinguished and used a large electric fan to remove residual smoke from the home.  The fire damage was contained to the kitchen with minor smoke damage spread throughout the home.  Damage is currently estimated at $3,000 to the home owned by Vann Keo.

Another occupant of the home, indicated to fire investigators that he had placed a pan of cooking oil onto the stovetop in preparation to fry some chicken, and stepped away momentarily.  When the smoke alarm sounded, he returned to the kitchen and discovered the fire.  While attempting to extinguish the fire, he received minor burns to his hands.  He was treated at the scene by Boone Hospital Center EMS staff and released.  The burn victims name is being withheld due to his being a medical patient.  He was a 23-year-old male.

The home did have properly working smoke alarms on each level.

Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department were on-scene and have determined the fire was caused by unattended cooking.  

Residents are reminded to avoid leaving cooking appliances unattended, even for short periods of time, in order to avoid kitchen fires.
