Rescue Deer from Swimming Pool
The Columbia Fire Department and the Boone County Fire Protection District were dispatched to a report of a deer trapped in an in-ground swimming pool at 2911 Scott Blvd at 2:05 PM on Monday, June 01, 2009. The calling party reported that a deer had fallen into a swimming pool and was unable to escape, and that some efforts of the caller had been unsuccessful in removing the deer from the pool.
Arriving units found a deer in the pool near exhaustion unable to climb out. Fire fighters and EMS personnel from the University Hospitals used rescue rope to lasso the deer and pull it to the side where fire fighters were able to pull the deer from the water. After a few minutes, the deer recovered and was able to return to the surrounding woods.
This event shows that not all animal rescues occur on ice covered bodies of water nor are all animal rescues associated with domestic animals.
Fire services expend resources on these types of calls due to the fact that there is normally at some point, some humane intervention to assist both domesticated and wild animals in distress. Untrained and ill-equipped civilian rescuers often end up in the water and can suffer serious injury or death while attempting a rescue.
Should an animal wander a body of water and not be able to escape, follow these instructions -
Do not attempt to rescue the animal
Call 9-1-1 from the nearest phone
Report your exact location to 9-1-1
Await the arrival of trained and properly equipped rescuers from emergency services
