FIRE FIGHTERS RESPOND TO FATALITY ACCIDENT
ON I-70 DRIVE SOUTHEAST
Columbia, Mo – Around 3:05 p.m. Columbia Fire Fighters responded to an extrication accident that resulted in a single fatality.
Fire Units arrived on the scene within minutes to find a two vehicle accident in front of 4208 I-70 Dr Southeast. One of the vehicles (a Maroon Kia Sportage) was resting on it’s roof facing Northwest with the driver pinned from the waist up beneath it. The driver of the Maroon vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The other vehicle (a Tan Ford Taurus station wagon) was upright on the roadway with front end damage. The driver of the Taurus was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries consistent with air bag deployment.
The extrication proved timely and difficult because of the location of the vehicle and the high temperature. Fire Fighters used large air bags and stabilizing struts to lift the vehicle off of the victim.
Police Investigators remain on the scene and no official cause has been determined at this time. The name of the fatally injured driver has been withheld.
