Columbia Fire Crews Rescue Drowning Victim

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 9:20 p.m. on Thursday, June 25, 2009 to 1133 Ashland Road, Tara Apartments, for a report of a possible drowning at the complex swimming pool.

Fire Fighters from station 3 on Ashland Road arrived and found a 22-year-old female unconscious, lying on the bottom of the pool, in approximately eight feet of water.  Fire crews entered the water and removed the victim from the pool, and immediately initiated resuscitative efforts.  Bystanders estimated the victim had been under water for approximately five minutes.  The victim was transported to University Hospital in critical condition.

Bystanders indicated the victim was visiting a resident of Tara Apartments and the two had been swimming for approximately 45 minutes.  The victim was swimming when she "lost her breath" and went below the surface.  The victim was described as a "new swimmer."

Residents are reminded to use extreme caution when swimming in waters not protected by a Life Guard, or when swimming skills are limited.
