Smoke Alarm Alerts Family to Home Fire

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 7:13 am on Wednesday, July 8, 2009 to 2904 Range Line Street, Lot 69, Colonial Village Trailer Court for a report of a structure fire.

Responding fire crews observed smoke visible from Range Line Street while en route.  On arrival, fire crews found smoke coming from the mobile home.  Crews entered the home and found a fire in the rear of the home, near the laundry room.  The fire was extinguished in approximately 15 minutes.  The home suffered significant fire damage in the rear portion with heavy smoke damage throughout the remaining areas.  There were no injuries and the damage is estimated at $25,000.

The home is owned by Marie Crews, who was home at the time.  She indicated to fire crews that she, and two visiting adult family members, were sleeping when they were awakened by the smoke alarms sounding.  When they awoke, they discovered heavy smoke in the home and a fire in the laundry room.  Mrs. Crews said they immediately evacuated the home and called 9-1-1 for fire department assistance.

Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department were on-scene and at this time, the cause remains under investigation.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds residents that, as this case highlights, properly functioning smoke alarms SAVE LIVES!
