7 TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL
IN EARLY MORNING VEHICLE CRASH – 1 FATALITY
Columbia, Mo – At 6:56 am on Wednesday, August 12, 2009, the Columbia Fire Department, Boone County Fire Protection District, ambulances from the University Hospitals and Boone Hospital were dispatched to the 124 mile marker of I-70 in the east-bound lanes for a report of a injury roll over crash involving one van.
Fire units from both departments arrived on the scene and found one van on it’s top in a ditch on the south side of I-70 just west of the Stadium Blvd overpass. Two people were still in the van, while 6 were outside of the van.
Fire fighters from both departments began treating the injured patients while also extricating one patient from the vehicle. The second occupant of the vehicle was pronounced dead by ambulance personnel.
During the extrication a fire erupted in the dash/engine compartment area of the van which was quickly extinguished by fire fighters who were standing by with a charged hose line.
The 7 patients transported were all classified as Class II, which means they were alert and communicating with fire and medical personnel, but because of the mechanism of injury (a roll over crash) they needed to further medical testing and evaluation before the exact extent of injuries could be determined.
It appears a number of people were traveling in several different vehicles in a convoy from Strurgis, South Dakota to their home state of Florida when the crash occurred. The Columbia Fire Department also transported 10 family members who were not injured to University Hospitals via the department’s bus so that they could be with their family members.
