Fire Damages North Columbia Home

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 10:30 pm on Thursday, September 10, 2009 to 2904 Range Line Street, Lot 66, Colonial Village Trailer Court for a report of a structure fire.

On arrival, fire crews found heavy smoke coming from a mobile home.  Crews entered the home and found a fire in the rear of the home, near the utility room.  The fire was extinguished in approximately 10 minutes.  The home suffered significant fire damage in the rear portion with heavy smoke and heat damage throughout the remaining areas.  There were no injuries and the damage is estimated at $7,500.

The occupant, Darrel Thomas, indicated to fire crews that he was sleeping and awoke to find smoke inside the home.  He exited the home with his cats and used a cell phone to call 9-1-1 for fire department assistance.

Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department are currently on-scene and at this time, the cause remains under investigation.

During the course of the incident, one subject was detained by the Columbia Police Department.  Andrew J. Worrall was issued a summons for "Disorderly Person at a Fire" for failing to obey the instructions of fire crews.  Worrall was removed from the scene by police and released on the municipal summons.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds residents that any area around a "working" fire incident is extremely dangerous.  Residents not involved directly with the incident should remain well clear of fire department personnel, apparatus, and hose lines during the course of an emergency.  Fire scenes are dynamic and rapidly changing.  For your safety and the safety of the fire crews, please follow any instructions given by fire department personnel.
