UPDATE--Cause Determined for Duncan Street Home Fire
Columbia Fire Department Investigators have determined a home fire on September 29, 2009 at 307 Duncan Street was accidental. After examining evidence found at the scene, and interviewing witnesses and occupants, the cause was determined to be an excessive number of fumigation devices being activated inside the home. Vapors from these devices reached the water heater pilot light and ignited.
No one was home during the 6:46 p.m. fire, which caused an estimated $50,000 in damage to the home; no injuries were reported.
The Columbia Fire Department reminds residents to read and follow all manufacturers' instructions and warnings when using any type of "fogger", or other product which introduces flammable vapors into a building.
