Water Damages Historic Documents at Missouri Historical Society
Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 5:31 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 to 520 South Ninth Street, Ellis Library, for a report of an automatic fire alarm system activation.
On arrival, fire crews found the source of the alarm to be a fire sprinkler head which had activated in a storage room containing books and records for the Missouri State Historical Society. There was no fire. Crews immediately stopped the flow of water through the sprinkler head and began controlling the water already inside the room.
Numerous books and documents within the room sustained water damage. Librarian staff from the Historical Society are currently on-scene and document restoration efforts are underway. Due to the historic nature of the books and documents, a damage estimate is impossible.
A representative from the Columbia Fire Department-Fire Marshal's Division is currently on-scene and working to determine a cause of the sprinkler system activation.
