No Injuries as Crane Collapses into Downtown Apartment Building

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 9:59 a.m. on Friday, October 2, 2009 to 920 Cherry Street, Niedermeyer Apartments, for a report of a Technical Rescue.

On arrival, fire crews discovered a 90-foot construction crane which had collapsed onto the apartment building, causing significant damage to the roof.  Fire Fighters entered the building and conducted searches for any injured or trapped occupants.  The building was evacuated and no injuries were reported.  A damage estimate is not currently available.

The crane is owned by Watkins Roofing.

The operator of the crane, Thomas Harig, indicated to fire crews that they were doing roof work on Booche's Restaurant.  During the course of the work, a large hoist was filled with "roof debris."  The crane was being used to remove the debris from the roof into a dump truck located in the adjacent alley.  Due to space limitations, the outriggers on the left side of the crane were not extended into place.  Outriggers are devices used to stabilize cranes or other vehicles equipped with aerial booms, when the aerial device is in use.  During the lift, a gust of wind swung the load over the apartment building and Mr. Harig was unable to recover the boom, resulting in the crane and load collapsing onto the building.

Representatives from the Columbia Public Works-Protective Inspections Division, and the Columbia Fire Department-Fire Marshal's Division were on-scene and have determined the building is not in danger of collapse.   At this time, officials are meeting to devise a plan for removal of the crane and to affect initial repairs to the building.

The Columbia Fire Department urges motorists to use caution if traveling in the area of South Ninth Street and Cherry Street for the remainder of today.  There will likely be street closures as additional cranes and equipment are brought into the scene to assist with the removal of the damaged crane.
