Fire Heavily Damages North Columbia Duplex

Columbia Fire Department and Boone County Fire Protection District Fire Fighters were called at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2009 to 5101 Silver Mill Drive, for a report of a structure fire.  Both agencies were dispatched as part of the Territorial Agreement currently in place.

Initial reports indicated that a 9-1-1 hang-up call had been received by Public Safety Joint Communications, and when the operator called back, they could hear smoke alarms sounding in the background.  Almost immediately, neighbors began calling 9-1-1 reporting the fire as well.

Responding crews observed smoke visible from Range Line Street while en route.  On arrival, fire crews found flames coming from the second floor of a duplex.  Crews entered the home and found a fire in a second floor bedroom, at the front of the home.  The fire was extinguished in approximately 20 minutes.  The home suffered significant fire damage to the second level with smoke, heat, and water damage throughout the remaining area.  There were no injuries.  Damage is currently estimated at $100,000 to the building owned by Brandon Hrubes.  The occupants of the adjacent side of the duplex were evacuated during the fire but have been allowed back into their home and suffered no damage.

The occupants of the home, Kelley and Jiselle Ballenger were not home at the time of the fire; however, three children, ages 14, 11, and 8 were in the home and self-evacuated during the fire.

Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department are currently on-scene working to determine a cause of the fire.  At this time, the cause remains under investigation.

The American Red Cross is providing disaster assistance to the Ballenger family as a result of the fire.  In addition, the Columbia Fire Department responded its Customer Service Van to the scene to provide shelter for the occupants during scene operations due to the chilly weather.
