UPDATE--Cause Determined for Silver Mill Drive Home Fire

Columbia Fire Department Investigators have determined this afternoon's duplex fire at 5101 Silver Mill Drive was accidental.  After examining evidence found at the scene, and interviewing witnesses and occupants, the cause was determined to be children playing with matches and incense sticks inside an upstairs bedroom.

No one was injured during the 12:45 p.m. fire, which caused an estimated $100,000 in damage to the duplex.

Tomorrow, October 4, 2009, marks the beginning of national Fire Prevention Week.  The theme for this year is "Stay Fire Smart!"  The Columbia Fire Department urges residents to take some time and look around your home for fire hazards.  Here are some actions you can take to "Stay Fire Smart!"

•       Cooking: Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period time, turn off the stove.
•       Heating: Keep all things that can burn, such as paper, bedding or furniture, at least 3 feet away from heating equipment.
•       Electrical: Replace cracked and damaged electrical cords; use extension cords for temporary wiring only. Consider having additional circuits or receptacles added by a qualified electrician.
•       Smoking: If you smoke, smoke outside; wherever you smoke, use deep, sturdy ashtrays.
•       Keep all lighters and matches out of reach of children
