Unattended Cooking Results in Afternoon Home Fire
Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 3:02 p.m. on Monday, October 5, 2009 to 1415 Sylvan Lane for a report of a structure fire.
Fire Fighters arrived and found smoke coming from the front door. Upon entry, crews discovered a fire in the kitchen of the home, which was brought under control within five minutes of their arrival. Crews used thermal imaging cameras to ensure there were no areas of fire concealed within the walls or ceiling. Additional fire crews used large electric fans to remove remaining smoke and heat from the home. Fire damage was contained to the kitchen, with moderate smoke damage throughout the remainder of the home. There were no injuries and damage is estimated at $5,000.
The building is owned by Allen Davis.
Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department were on-scene and have determined the cause of the fire was unattended cooking.
The occupant, Shavon Townsend, indicated to fire crews that she and a visiting relative had placed some grease on the stove to cook French Fries. Townsend further indicated she left the home for an appointment and "forgot the grease was on the stove." During the appointment, she remembered the grease and returned home to find the fire.
This week is national "Fire Prevention Week." The theme for this year is "Stay Fire Smart!" The Columbia Fire Department urges residents to take some time and look around your home for fire hazards. Here are some actions you can take to "Stay Fire Smart!"
• Cooking: Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period time, turn off the stove.
• Heating: Keep all things that can burn, such as paper, bedding or furniture, at least 3 feet away from heating equipment.
• Electrical: Replace cracked and damaged electrical cords; use extension cords for temporary wiring only. Consider having additional circuits or receptacles added by a qualified electrician.
• Smoking: If you smoke, smoke outside; wherever you smoke, use deep, sturdy ashtrays.
• Keep all lighters and matches out of reach of children
