Cooking Fire Damages South Columbia Apartment

Columbia Fire Department and Boone County Fire Protection District Fire Fighters were called at 3:12 p.m. on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 to 320 Old Plank Road, Brookside Apartments, Apartment 104 for a report of a structure fire.  Both agencies were dispatched as part of the Territorial Agreement currently in place.

Fire Fighters arrived and found smoke coming from the front door.  Upon entry, crews discovered a fire in the kitchen, which was brought under control within five minutes.  Crews used thermal imaging cameras to ensure there were no areas of fire concealed within the walls or ceiling.  Additional fire crews used large fans to remove remaining smoke and heat from the home.  Fire damage was contained to the kitchen, with moderate smoke damage throughout the remainder of the home.  There were no injuries and damage is estimated at $7,500.

The building is owned by Old Plank L.L.C.

Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department were on-scene and have determined the cause of the fire was unattended cooking.

The Occupant, Marquetta Allen indicated to fire crews that a pan of grease had been placed on the stove and left unattended when she became distracted.  Upon hearing the smoke alarm activate, she returned to the kitchen and discovered the fire.  9-1-1 was then called to request fire department assistance.  Eboni Deramus also occupies the apartment; however, was not home when the fire began.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds residents to ensure that all food items have been removed from cooking appliances, or have been turned off when unattended, even for a short time.
