Unattended Cooking Causes Central City Home Fire
Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 9:15 p.m. on Friday, December 4, 2009 to 21 East Ash Street in central Columbia for a report of a structure fire.
Fire crews arrived and found smoke and flames coming from the rear of the home. Upon entry, crews discovered a fire in the kitchen, which was brought under control within ten minutes. Crews used thermal imaging cameras to ensure there were no areas of fire concealed within the walls or ceiling. Additional fire crews used large fans to remove remaining smoke and heat from the home. The kitchen sustained severe fire damage, with moderate smoke damage throughout the remainder of the home. There were no injuries and damage is estimated at $10,000.
The structure is owned by Truman Allen of Columbia and is currently uninhabitable due to the extent of fire damage.
The occupants, David Humphries and Jonna Wiseman were home at the time of the fire. Mr. Humphries indicated to fire crews that some vegetable oil had been placed in a "Dutch Oven" in preparation for frying some tater tots. After the oil was placed on the stove, it was left unattended for a few minutes while it heated. A barking dog alerted them to the fire, at which time they found "the kitchen on fire." They exited the structure and called 9-1-1 to request fire department assistance. Smoke alarms did sound in the home; however, the occupants were already aware of the fire at that time.
Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department were on-scene and have determined the cause of the fire to be unattended cooking.
The American Red Cross is providing emergency assistance to Mr. Humphries and Ms. Wiseman as a result of this fire.
Residents are reminded to ensure that all food items have been removed from cooking appliances, or have been turned off when unattended, even for a short time.
