Home Suffers Extensive Damage from Intentionally Set Fire

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 to 2107 Dickinson Court for a report of a structure fire.

Fire crews arrived and found smoke and flames coming from the rear of the home.  Upon entry, crews discovered a large fire in the basement level of the home, which was brought under control within 20 minutes.  Crews used thermal imaging cameras to ensure there were no areas of fire concealed within the walls, ceiling, or attic.  Additional fire crews used large fans to remove remaining smoke and heat from the home.  The finished basement sustained extensive fire damage, with smoke and heat damage throughout the remainder of the home.  There were no injuries and damage is estimated at $150,000.  A dog inside the home was killed during the fire.

The structure is owned by Samantha Jo Baker Fitzmorris, who was not at home at the time of the fire.

Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department are currently working at the scene and have determined the fire was intentionally set.  Several articles of physical evidence were located and recovered at the scene.  Additional evidence at the scene suggests the home may have been burglarized as well.  Officers from the Columbia Police Department are assisting with the on-going investigation.
