Columbia Fire Fighters Battle Second Major Fire

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 12:27 p.m. on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 to 1103 Eastwood Circle for a report of a structure fire.  Initial reports, called in by a neighbor, indicated there was a large amount of smoke coming from the windows of the home.

Fire crews arrived and found flames coming through the roof of the home.  Upon entry, crews discovered a large fire in the first floor and attic of the home, which was brought under control within 30 minutes.  Crews used thermal imaging cameras to ensure there were no areas of fire concealed within the walls.  Additional fire crews used large fans to remove remaining smoke and heat from the home.  The home suffered extensive fire damage to the attic and roof, with smoke, heat, and water damage throughout the remainder of the home.  There were no injuries and damage is estimated at $115,000.

The structure is owned by Joseph Calvert of Springfield, Missouri.  The home is a rental property and is currently vacant.

Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department are working at the scene and at this time, the cause remains under investigation.

This was the second major fire battled by Columbia Fire Fighters within a nine-hour period.  At 4:00 a.m. this morning, an intentionally set fire heavily damaged a home at 2107 Dickinson Court in north Columbia.
