Broken Sprinkler Pipe Causes Water Damage
Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 2:55 p.m. on Monday, January 11, 2010 to 800 Hospital Drive, Veterans Hospital, for a report of an automatic fire alarm system activation.
On arrival, fire crews discovered a broken pipe in the fire sprinkler system, inside the west stairwell of the new clinic annex. Maintenance staff from the hospital shut off the water supply to the effected area, while fire crews began controlling the water inside the building. Two fire crews remained on-scene for over an hour assisting hospital staff with property conservation efforts. Water damage extended from the third floor, into the electrical room in the basement. The new clinic annex is currently operating on emergency generator power due to water inside the main electrical room. Operations inside the main hospital building are not effected by this incident. Hospital maintenance staff are continuing recovery efforts this evening.
Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department were on-scene and have determined the cause of this incident was the recent cold temperatures.
There were no injuries and a damage estimate is currently unavailable.
