Overnight Fire Engulfs North Columbia Home

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 2:24 a.m. on Wednesday, February 3, 2010 to 3406 Range Line Street, Lot 91 of Rustic Meadows Trailer, Court for a report of a structure fire.

Fire crews arrived and found flames coming through the windows in the front of the home.  Upon entry, crews discovered a large fire in the living room and front bedroom of the home, which was brought under control within 30 minutes.  Crews worked to prevent the fire from spreading to adjoining homes; however, a storage shed received minor heat damage.  Additional fire crews used large fans to remove remaining smoke and heat from the home.  The home had no utility service.  The home sustained extensive fire damage throughout.  There were no injuries and the home is considered a total loss; a cost estimate is not currently available.

The Boone County Fire Protection District provided one water tanker to assist Columbia Fire Crews with water supply to battle this blaze. 

Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department were on-scene and have determined the cause of the fire to be an unattended candle.

The occupant, Thomas Bower, indicated to fire crews that he was using a candle to read a book and fell asleep.  He awoke to find his bedding and coat on fire.  He immediately exited the home and called 9-1-1 to request fire department assistance.  There were no working smoke alarms in the home.

The Columbia Fire Department urges all residents to ensure they have properly functioning smoke alarms installed on each level of their home and outside every sleeping area.  City of Columbia residents who do not have a smoke alarm in their home may obtain one at no cost by contacting the Columbia Fire Department Fire Marshal's Division at 201 Orr Street, or by contacting the Columbia Professional Fire Fighters Local 1055 at 573-823-6942.  SMOKE ALARMS SAVE LIVES!
