Fire Damages South Columbia Home Injuring One
Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 10:10 pm. On Friday, February 12, 2010 to 5012 Forum Blvd for a report of a structure fire.
Fire crews arrived and found a large amount of flames coming from the rear of the home, extending from the basement level to the roof. It took crews approximately 30 minutes to bring the flames under control. Crews worked to prevent the fire from spreading throughout the entire home. Additional fire crews used large fans to remove remaining smoke and heat from inside the home. The home sustained extensive fire damage to the rear, with smoke and water damage throughout. Damage is currently estimated at $50,000 to the home owned by Frank and Alice Montagnino.
Initially, fire crews received reports of one person possibly trapped inside the home with a second person entering the home in an attempt to rescue the victim. These reports proved false and all three occupants evacuated the home and were found inside a neighbor's home. The occupants initially reported to crews that they were uninjured; however, one occupant was later treated at the scene by University Hospital EMS staff for burns to his hands.
At the time of the fire, the home was occupied by Frank Montagnino, his Wife Alice, and their Granddaughter Sarah Olsen. Mr. Montagnino indicated to fire crews that he had been watching television when he entered the kitchen, at which time he saw flames through the rear windows of the home. He exited the home and found a large fire on the rear deck. He then attempted to self-extinguish the flames using a carpet, sustaining burns on his hands. He directed his Wife to call 9-1-1 and request Fire Department assistance. The home was equipped with smoke alarms which did sound during the fire.
Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department were on-scene and at this time, the cause remains under investigation.
The Columbia Fire Department reminds residents to never attempt self-extinguish of a fire inside a building, and to immediately evacuate if you are inside a building and a fire is discovered.
