Unattended Cooking Blamed for South Columbia Apartment Fire

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 8:11 p.m. on Friday, March 5, 2010 to 220 Apple Tree Court, Apt 7, for a report of a residential structure fire.

Fire crews arrived to find light smoke showing and active fire in the attic, above the kitchen stove, which was brought under control within 10-15 minutes.  Additional fire crews used large fans to remove smoke and heat from inside the apartment.  The apartment sustained fire damage to the kitchen area and into the attic, with moderate smoke damage throughout the rest of the apartment.  There were no injuries, and damage is estimated at $8,000.  The apartment building is owned by Don Fries.

Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department were on-scene and have determined the cause of the fire to be unattended cooking.

The occupant had just arrived home at the time of the fire and opened the door to find smoke. The building owner, Don Fries, was in the building and was alerted to the fire by the smoke detectors in the common area. Mr. Fries entered the apartment with a fire extinguisher and used it to extinguish some of the fire on the stove top prior to the arrival of the fire department.  

The Columbia Fire Department reminds residents to never leave cooking unattended. 

The Columbia Fire Department also reminds residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. In this case, had it not been for the working smoke alarm, the fire could have easily grown out of control, endangering the other residents and causing significant damage to the apartment building.
