Spectacular Fire Destroys Historic Maplewood Barn Theatre

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 7:56 p.m. on Monday, April 05, 2010 to 2900 East Nifong Blvd., the Maplewood Barn Theatre, for a report of a structure fire.

Fire crews responding from nearby Columbia Fire Station 8 reported a large amount of smoke and fire visible from the station.  Upon arrival, crews discovered the historic barn fully engulfed in flames.  The roof and outside walls had already begun to collapse.  Crews initiated an exterior "defensive" fire attack due to the extreme fire conditions making it unsafe to place fire personnel inside the structure.  Two "Quint" apparatus, which are 75' aerial ladder towers, were utilized to apply large elevated water streams onto the fire, while additional crews used several hose lines to protect neighboring buildings and to battle the blaze.  It took approximately 45 minutes to bring the flames under control.  At this time, there are no known injuries related to this incident.  The structure is considered a total loss; however, due to the historic nature of the facility, a damage estimate is not currently available. 

The Maplewood Barn is located in Nifong Park and dates back to the 1800's.  The property is owned by the City of Columbia, and was used by the Maplewood Barn Theatre under a cooperative agreement with the city.  The barn, farmhouse, and other outlying buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Seven Columbia Fire Department apparatus and two water tankers from the Boone County Fire Protection District worked to control the fire.  The tankers were requested through mutual aid to provide additional water supply at the scene.

Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department are currently working at the scene and at this time, the cause remains under investigation.

During the initial stages of this blaze, it was visible throughout most of the Columbia metropolitan area.  Flames were reaching 30-40 feet into the air.  There were some additional small spot fires in the area due to flying embers.  These fires were quickly extinguished without damage to other structures.
