Two Vehicle Accident Traps Injured Victim

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 4:32 p.m. on Wednesday, May 05, 2010 to the intersection of Hinkson Ave and Old Highway 63 for a report of an extrication accident.

Fire Fighters arrived and found a Silver Suzuki facing north in the south bound lane with heavy front end damage and an older F350 Pick up in the northbound lane with damage to the side of the vehicle. Crews investigated and found the driver of the Suzuki was trapped in her vehicle and needed to be extricated. Fire Crews used specialized hydraulic rescue equipment from the Columbia Fire Departments Heavy Rescue Squad to remove the passenger door and free the driver. The extrication took approximately 10 minutes and then the injured 33 yr old driver was transported to University Hospital by ambulance. Both the driver and the passenger of the4 pick-up truck were transported by POV's (privately owned vehicles) to Boone Hospital to be evaluated. Investigators indicated that the Suzuki was traveling south on Old Hwy 63 when it veered across the center line and struck the side of the pick-up truck. 

The Columbia Fire Department reminds all motorists to wear their seatbelts. The law requires all persons in the vehicle to be seat belted in but just as important is the fact that seat belts save lives.
