Cooking Fire Damages North Columbia Home
Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 11:07 a.m. on Saturday, May 22, 2010 to 2010 Holly Avenue for a report of a structure fire.
Fire crews arrived and found light smoke coming from a one story home. Upon entry, crews discovered a small fire in the kitchen, which was brought under control within five minutes. Fire damage was confined to the kitchen with minor smoke damage throughout the home. Additional crews worked to remove the remaining smoke from the home. There were no injuries and damage is estimated at $2,500 to the home owned by Katherine Wright.
Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department were on-scene and have determined the fire cause to be unattended cooking.
Mrs. Wright indicated to fire crews that her juvenile Granddaughter was cooking French Fries on the stove top. She had used a pan of oil to cook the fries and thought she had turned the burner off upon completion of the cooking. Mrs. Wright stated she was in the backyard and when she returned to the home, she discovered smoke and flames in the kitchen. She evacuated the home and called 9-1-1 for fire department assistance.
The home did not have any working smoke alarms installed. Fire Fighters installed a smoke alarm in the home prior to leaving the scene.
Residents are reminded to ensure that they have properly functioning smoke alarms installed on every level of their home, and outside of all sleeping areas. SMOKE ALARMS SAVE LIVES!
