<div style="font-size: 110%; line-height:200%;"><h3 style="clear:both; margin-top: 75px;  margin-bottom: 10px; font-weight: bold; font-size: 170%;">Flat Branch Sewer Relief Project 1 update - MKT Closure and Detour</h3>
<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - <p style="display:inline;">The completion of the Flat Branch Sewer Relief Project 1 has been delayed, which means the closure of the MKT Trail will also be extended past the estimated reopening date of Oct.15.</p>

<p>The contractor's work has been delayed due to the unexpected amount of hard rock under the ground's surface and the time it has taken to dig through the rock to create deep sewer trenches. Project 1 is now expected to be completed by the end of October.</p>

<p>The current sewer project affects the half-mile section of the MKT Trail between the Lakeshore access (mile marker 7.75) and the Garth Avenue connector (mile marker 8.25). It is important for the safety of trail users to follow all posted signs indicating a closure or detour along the trail.</p>

<p>The next phase of the sewer project will include the paved portion of the MKT Trail from Elm Street to the Providence and Stewart Road underpass. This work will begin after the contractor completes the work from Stewart to Stadium Boulevard.  At that time, the contractor will prepare for the bore under the Elm Street entrance to the power plant. Once the next phase begins, the MKT Trail detour will be updated to include the sidewalks on Elm and Providence Road.</p>

<p>Construction began on June 23 on the sewer project, which will replace and upgrade old sewer pipes that serve a large portion of the downtown area. Some of the sewer pipes are the original infrastructure from the early 1900s. The investment in the City's sanitary sewer infrastructure with this project is $3,879,650 and is funded through Sanitary Sewer Utility Capital Improvement funds. Sterling Excavation of Jefferson City is the contractor on the project.</p>

<p>As the construction project progresses, additional details will be released via press releases, signs on the trail, social media and the COMO Trails app available for both Android and iPhone users. Project impact and project update information is available on the web at CoMo.gov/fbrs.</p>
