(COLUMBIA, MO) -
The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire at 3303 Blue Grouse Drive on Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at 2:06pm. Units arrived approximately five minutes later and observed heavy smoke coming from a one story, single family home.

Fire crews deployed a preconnected hose line and performed an aggressive fire attack, containing the fire to the kitchen.

There was no one in the home at the time of the fire.

Assistant Fire Marshal Jim Pasley performed an origin and cause investigation and determined the fire started in the kitchen as a result of unattended cooking. While the fire was contained to the kitchen there was smoke damage throughout the home. Pasley estimates damage at $70,000.

Seven units from the Columbia Fire Department responded to this call. There were no reported injuries.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds residents that smoke alarms save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every ten years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room and in a common area on every floor.
