(COLUMBIA, MO) -
The Columbia City Council has announced the hiring of Cavanaugh Noce to succeed Robert Aulgur as Columbia's municipal judge. Noce is currently the City's deputy city counselor which he was promoted to in May 2012. Noce started working for the City as an assistant city counselor in May 2008.

The main function of the municipal judge is to preside over hearings for ordinance violations, traffic violations and perform marriage ceremonies, a new function of municipal court as of fall 2015.

"Because Municipal Court is often the first and sometimes only interaction the public has with the City, it's important to have a judge who is an effective communicator and he fits that," First Ward Councilman Clyde Ruffin said. "It's also important to have someone who understands the importance of the City's Strategic Plan and Cavanaugh knows the significance, especially when it comes to social equity."

Noce said he's honored to be selected as the next judge.

"I really appreciate the opportunity to serve the public," he said. "It is my hope to have a positive impact on the community through fair and consistent application of the law."

While looking ahead to the future, Noce said he wants to remember the value and quality of our City's court.

"I want to uphold Columbia's proud tradition of excellence and make Columbia's municipal court as accessible and transparent as possible," he said.

Current Municipal Court Judge Robert Aulgur will retire on Jan. 11, 2017 after 13 years working for the City.

Noce's first day as municipal judge will be Jan. 12. He will receive $102,000 in base pay.

The Municipal Court for the City of Columbia is a division of the Circuit Court Boone County, 13th Judicial Circuit.
