<div style="font-size: 110%; line-height:200%;"><h3 style="clear:both; margin-top: 75px;  margin-bottom: 10px; font-weight: bold; font-size: 170%;">Columbia sewer line smoke testing scheduled to being Nov. 21</h3>
<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - <p style="display:inline;">The City of Columbia and TREKK Design Group, LLC (TREKK) will be completing manhole inspection and smoke testing beginning the week of Nov. 21 with the exception of Nov. 24 and 25, weather permitting.</p>
<p>During the past few years, the City has studied different basin areas and completing construction work to repair problem areas in the sewer collection system.  These repairs include manhole lining, sewer pipe lining, lateral connection repair, and in some instances entire sewer replacement. Some areas were studied 15 years ago.  The work was required to reduce the volume of stormwater that enters the sewer system creating overflows, backups, and costing the rate payers to treat the flow at the treatment plant.</p>
<p>This work will not be as extensive as previous years and is specifically targeted in areas where work has been done to address previously identified defects and assess the condition of repairs completed.  Smoke testing will be used to identify potential cross connections and sewer defects.  A similar procedure will be used as was done during past studies.  </p>
<p>An odorless and non-toxic smoke will be introduced into the sewer under pressure from a blower at the surface and a field crew will walk the areas near the sewer pipe and record visible signs of smoke.  TREKK will be working with City staff, including police and fire departments to communicate the work areas each day.  </p>
<p>All TREKK staff will be wearing TREKK protective clothing and will have name badges.  TREKK staff will not ask to enter homes.  If you see smoke in your house please contact 911 and exit the house until it is confirmed that the smoke is a result of testing and not related to a fire.</p>
<p>TREKK began distributing door hangers this week to homes in the neighborhoods where testing will be performed. Weather permitting, the testing will complete in four to five business days. </p></div>
