<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - <p style="display:inline;">With winter upon us the Columbia Fire Department reminds citizens to stay safe when driving.  A few additional preparations can help make your trips safer.</p>
<p><strong>Plan Your Route</strong> - Allow plenty of time, be familiar with directions and let others know your route and arrival time.</p>
<p><strong>Stock Your Vehicle</strong> - It's good practice to have flashlights, jumper cables, abrasive material (sand, kitty litter, etc), shovel, ice scrapers, road flares, blankets and non-perishable snacks in your vehicle.</p>
<p><strong>Winterize Your Car - </strong>Fill your vehicle's windshield washer reservoir with high quality, "no freeze" fluid, make sure your windshield wipers are in good working order, ensure your window defrosters are working properly, thoroughly check your cooling system for leaks, fluid level and servicing periods and inspect your tires for tread condition and tire pressure.</p>
<p>Make sure you allow plenty of time to defrost your vehicle before traveling in it and exercise caution when driving. Allow additional time and space for braking and turning when roadways are slick.</p>
