(COLUMBIA, MO) -
University of Missouri seniors in Dr. John Bowders' Civil Engineering Systems Design course presented airport redesign proposals to City of Columbia staff on Monday, Dec. 5.

The students formed two consulting teams and spent the semester gaining an understanding of Columbia Regional Airport's needs and how they could improve the functionality, sustainability and expansion opportunities in the future. Their hypothetical budget was $40 million.

The designs included new terminal buildings, pavement design, and stormwater and wastewater management.

"Our project looks to meet the demands of customers and to attract more visitors than the airport is currently serving," said Warthog Consulting Engineers team leader Kristin Hofstetter. "We hope you can see that we're influenced by the City's devotion to learning, innovation and sustainability."

Designs also included general, structural, geotechnical and environmental segments.

"We are dedicated to providing the most sustainable and cost efficient design for the project at hand," said SAC Design team leader Simon Sandler.

The design projects were part of the final semester capstone design course. The students will receive their respective engineering degrees at the December commencement ceremony. Dr. Bowders asked attendees to evaluate the students in the areas of engineering abilities, communication skills and preparation of the student consulting teams.

City staff also attended the preliminary presentations in early November, as the consulting teams presented their Airport Improvement and Terminal Expansion progress reports.
