(COLUMBIA, MO) -
The Solid Waste division of Columbia Utilities will be picking up trash and recycling and Christmas trees on the normal collection cycle this week, despite the City observed holiday on Monday, Jan. 2. There are several options for Columbia residents to recycle/dispose of live Christmas trees:

Before the end of January, you can simply set the tree curbside on your normally scheduled pickup day without cutting it into 4 foot lengths. The trees will go directly into the landfill where the trees will decompose and assist in the generation of methane gas used to generate electricity.

After January, the tree must be cut into segments no longer than 4 feet if you dispose of it on the curb during your trash collection day. You may take your tree to be ground into mulch or compost to either of the public mulch sites; Parkside Drive or Capen Park or the compost facility located at the landfill, 5700 Peabody Road. There will be no charge for mulching or composting your tree. Please ensure that all decorations and tinsel have been removed from the tree.

While you may leave decorations on the tree if it is set out for curbside pickup, we urge you to consider recycling the decorations if you do not want them. Consider "gifting" ornaments and other decorations to someone who may be in need of those items.

Artificial trees and wreaths which have met the end of their lifespan should be disposed of in your normal trash collection.
