<p style="display: inline;">Assistant Fire Marshal Jim Pasley estimates damage from this fire at $120,000.  The fire originated in the kitchen of apartment A and is the result of unattended cooking.</p>

<p style="display: inline;">The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire at 2811 Mexico Gravel Road, apartment A at 12:18am on Thursday, January 5, 2017.</p>
<p>Units arrived less than six minutes later and found heavy fire on the first floor of the apartment building.</p>
<p>Crews performed an aggressive fire attack from both the interior and exterior and had the situation under control in approximately twenty minutes.</p>
<p>Apartment A sustained heavy fire damage.  An adjacent apartment sustained smoke and water damage. </p>
<p>There were a total of twenty two occupants in the building.  The Columbia Fire Department's bus was dispatched to the scene to serve as a warming center for the residents.  The American Red Cross responded and provided assistance to the occupants of apartment A and adjacent apartment B.</p>
<p>One dog from apartment A died after resuscitation efforts were performed.  There were no other reported injuries.</p>
<p>Fire investigators are performing an origin and cause investigation.  More information will be released as it becomes available.</p>
<p>Nine units from the Columbia Fire Department responded to this event. </p>
<p>Smoke alarms save lives.  The Columbia Fire Department reminds residents to test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button.  Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year.  Replace smoke alarms every ten years.  To ensure adequate protection place smoke alarms in every sleeping room and in a common area on every floor.</p></div>
