<div style="font-size: 110%; line-height:200%;"><h3 style="clear:both; margin-top: 75px;  margin-bottom: 10px; font-weight: bold; font-size: 170%;">Columbia Fire Department adds new life saving tool</h3>
<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, on an average day in the United States more than 650,000 opioid prescriptions are dispensed&sup1;, 3,900 people initiate non-medical use of prescription opioids, 580 people initiate heroin use&sup2; and 78 people die from an opioid-related overdose&sup3;.  The Columbia Fire Department responded to 354 poisonings / drug ingestion calls in calendar year 2016. <strong>NOTE - Local statistics cover a broad category.  Not all are necessarily opioid overdoses.</strong><br /><br />Columbia is not immune to opioid related overdoses.  Consequently, the Columbia Fire Department will begin carrying naloxone, a medication used to rapidly reverse the effects of opioid overdoses, on all front-line trucks Jan. 26, 2017.  Naloxone will have no effects, adverse or otherwise, on individuals who have ingested a substance other
 
  than an opioid.  Naloxone has been successfully administered to patients as young as two years old and in the elderly.<br /><br />"Opioid overdose deaths are devastating to all communities, including Columbia.  Our ability to administer naloxone has the potential to save lives," said Fire Chief Randy White.<br /><br />All uniformed Columbia Fire Department personnel will be trained in administering naloxone using a nasal atomizer device.  Assistant Fire Chief Brad Fraizer is available at Fire Administration, 201 Orr Street between 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 26 for media questions, interviews, etc.  The last of a series of three days of department-wide training is occurring during this time at Fire Administration which should provide filming opportunities.<br /><br /><br />__________________________________<br />&sup1; HHS / IMS Health National Prescriptive Audit<br />&sup2; HHS / SAMHSA National Survey on Drug Use and Health<br />&sup3; HHS
