(COLUMBIA, MO) - On Wednesday, February 1 at 5:10 PM, units from the Columbia Fire Department were dispatched to 4803 Mexico Gravel Road for a non-dwelling structure fire. Responding units advised smoke was visible from Vandiver Road.

The first unit arrived on the scene in less than five minutes and found an approximate 1000 square foot detached garage and shop with smoke visible. Crews made an aggressive fire attack with preconnected hose lines and limited the damage to the interior of the structure.

Assistant Fire Marshal Jim Pasley investigated the cause of the fire. Pasley determined the fire was caused by embers from a wood-burning stove discarded too close to combustibles. The damages are estimated at $20,000.

An occupant sustained minor burns to his hand when attempting to remove items from the structure. He was evaluated on the scene
but refused transport to the hospital.

A total of seven Columbia Fire units responded to the scene.

Columbia Fire Department reminds everyone to "Get out and stay out" when you discover a fire.
