(COLUMBIA, MO) -
The intersection at Stadium Boulevard and Old Highway 63, which serves as a gateway for travelers to and from major universities, hospitals, schools and businesses, will look very different by this fall. Aplex, the contractor for the project, is scheduled to begin work on the intersection March 20, weather permitting. The project is currently estimated to be completed by Fall 2017.

"Once construction is completed, the intersection will function much better for pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Also, the beautification improvements will have the intersection looking much nicer," said Engineering Supervisor Allison Anderson.

The Stadium and Old 63 Intersection Improvement Project will increase the capacity of the intersection, add pedestrian and bicycle improvements related to Vision Zero goals and enhance its appearance. Capacity improvements include dual left turn lanes for northbound to westbound traffic and a right turn lane for westbound to northbound traffic. The project also includes crosswalks, marked bike lanes and sidewalks that tie into the trail system. Beautification improvements will feature rain gardens, native grasses and tree/shrub plantings.

Public forums about the project were held on Feb. 17, 2015, and May 4, 2015, before being approved by the City Council. The infrastructure investment will be shared by the City and the Missouri Department of Transportation, each providing one-half of the project investment revenue. The estimated investment is $1,750,000 with the City's portion of the funding coming from 2005 Capital Improvement Sales Tax.

Much of the work will be completed during the day, but any lane closures necessary for construction of the project are currently planned to be completed in the evening.

Updates on project progress will be available throughout the year at www.como.gov/publicworks/stadium-old63.
