<div style="font-size: 110%; line-height:200%;"><h3 style="clear:both; margin-top: 75px;  margin-bottom: 10px; font-weight: bold; font-size: 170%;">Fire on Fir Place</h3>
<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire at 1502 Fir Place, apartment B at 1:25pm on Thursday, March 16, 2017.<br /><br />Fire crews arrived on the scene less than five minutes later and observed smoke inside the structure.  They determined the smoke was coming from apartment B, forced entry into the apartment and quickly extinguished a small fire in the carpet with a fire extinguisher.<br /><br />Fire investigator, Assistant Fire Marshal Mike Bauer, determined the cause of the fire was improperly discarded smoking material.  Damage is estimated at $1,000. No one was in the apartment at the time of the fire.  There were no reported injuries.<br /><br />Seven units from the Columbia Fire Department responded to this call.<br /><br />This apartment had a working smoke alarm which alerted a neighbor in an adjacent apartment.  That neighbor was abl
 
 e to call 911 in a timely manner and helped prevent this fire from growing and damaging more property.<br /><br />The Columbia Fire Department encourages all citizens to ensure they have working smoke alarms on every floor of their home and outside every room where people sleep.  The Columbia Fire Department provides smoke alarms, free of charge, to homeowners who are not able to purchase them.  For information on this program email us at <a href="mailto:fire@como.gov">fire@como.gov</a> or call us at 573-874-7556. </div>
