(COLUMBIA, MO) -
On Monday, May 15, the City of Columbia Utility Department will begin the third phase of construction on the Flat Branch Watershed Relief Sewer Project. This will result in a temporary closure of Elm Street between Providence and Fifth Street for approximately 30 days, weather permitting. Please keep an eye out for updates on this project as road closures will be adjusted as the work progresses along Elm Street and up Sixth Street.

Motorists, nonmotorized transportation users and pedestrians are urged to exercise extreme caution when in the work zone and use alternate routes whenever possible.

Project Overview:

The project is a collaborative effort between City of Columbia Utilities, Public Works, and the University of Missouri and includes several improvements along Elm Street between Providence and Hitt, and up Sixth Street between Elm and Broadway. In addition to replacing the current City gravity sewer lines with higher capacity pipes, the City will be replacing two storm drains along Elm Street, at Ninth and Hitt, relocating the water main, and upgrading the water distribution infrastructure along Sixth, and allow for concurrent repair work on the University's Steam Tunnel.

In order to minimize the inconvenience to citizens, Sterling Excavation & Erection, LLC will begin on Elm Street near Providence and will work its way east to Hitt Street. The project was designed to coordinate construction schedules between each utility and the contractors, allowing for quicker turnaround. By completing the construction in phases, it will require the intersection to be usable before moving on to the next, therefore, only necessary north/south roadways will be closed.

Sewer Improvements:

This project will replace approximately 3,120 feet of sewer lines with new pipes ranging in size from 8-inch to 18-inch in diameter. The work will take place along Elm Street from Providence Road to Hitt Street, and along Sixth Street from Elm to Broadway. The proposed project will provide increased sewer capacity for the downtown area and the upper northeast portion of the Flat Branch Watershed. This project will be paid for from Sanitary Sewer Utility Funds.

Sixth Street Water Main Relocation and Upgrades: Water & Light will upgrade approximately 1,245 feet of water distribution infrastructure along Sixth Street from Elm Street to Broadway. The existing water mains through the project corridor consist mostly of 4-inch cast iron. These aging water mains show increased need for maintenance and are nearing the end of their useful service life. The new main will be constructed of 8-i
nch PVC piping materials and will provide greater reliability for customers' water supply as well as increase available flow to the area for fire protection purposes. This work will be paid for from Water Utility Funds.

Ninth and Elm Storm Drain Replacement:
This project includes the replacement of a failing storm box and inlets at the intersection of Ninth and Elm. A new 54' storm drain will be constructed with new inlets and junction boxes, and will connect to an existing 60" storm drain on the University property west of Ninth Street. This work will be paid for from Stormwater Utility Funds.

Hitt and Elm Storm Drain Replacement:

This project includes the replacement of a failing storm pipe on Elm Street and Hitt Street. This work will be paid for from Stormwater Utility Funds.

UMC Steam Tunnel Repair work:

This project will also include coordination with the University of Missouri for steam tunnel rehabilitation work in the Elm Street and Seventh Street rights of way. This work will be paid for by the University.
