(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a small, unknown hazardous materials spill in the 1500 block of Windsor Street on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 10:04am.

While en route to the call crews were advised that members of Columbia's Solid Waste Department found a trash bag with light smoke coming from it. The responding units then requested Columbia Fire Department's Hazardous Materials Truck.

Crews arrived approximately five minutes after dispatch and identified a black trash bag with light, white smoke coming from it. The Hazardous Materials Truck arrived approximately fifteen minutes later. Crews donned specialized hazardous material protective equipment and were able to determine that two household chemicals, The Works toilet bowel cleaner and Bar Keepers Friend, a household cleaner, had emptied from their containers and mixed in the bottom of the garbage b
ag resulting in a chemical reaction that produced the light smoke.

Crews applied an absorbing, neutralizing agent to the liquid and safely disposed of it.

Five units from the Columbia Fire Department responded to this call. There were no reported injuries.
