(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Columbia Fire Department has a new member on its arson investigation team. While a rookie, he's guaranteed to be an instant pro when it comes to sniffing out accelerants that may have been used to start fires.

Through a grant from State Farm Insurance, Assistant Fire Marshal Jim Pasley will be fighting arson with Izzo, a 1 year-old male Golden Retriever/Black Labrador mix. The two spent over a month of training at the New Hampshire State Fire Academy and will showcase their abilities by doing a demonstration at the insurer's main office next week.

State Farm has sponsored more than 380 arson dog teams in the United States since the program began in 1993. Currently, there are 96 active teams.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), an estimated 280,000 intentional fires are reported to fire departments each year, with associated
annual losses of 420 civilian deaths, 1,360 civilian injuries and $1.3 billion in direct property damage. The actual number of arson fires and amount of property damage is likely much higher as arson is an underreported crime. Arson dogs played a key role in determining the cause of many fires.

WHEN:
2:00pm, Monday, June 5
Press Conference & Demonstration

WHERE:
State Farm Operations Center
4700 S.
