Back-to-school immunizations required for children entering eighth, 12th grades

(COLUMBIA, MO) -
Beat the back-to-school rush and mark the required immunizations off your back-to-school checklist now.

The Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services (PHHS) reminds residents that immunizations are required by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services for any children entering the eighth and 12th grades in any Missouri school. Immunizations are available at the PHHS office located at 1005 W. Worley St.

All children entering eighth grade are required to get one dose of the Tdap vaccine, which protects against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis. Tetanus can limit swallowing or breathing; diphtheria can lead to breathing problems, paralysis and death; and pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a contagious disease that causes violent coughing and can lead to breathing problems.

The meningococcal vaccine is also required for all those entering the eighth and 12th grades. The meningococcal vaccine protects against different types of bacteria that can be spread through coughing, sneezing, kissing or sharing anything by mouth, and can lead to brain damage, loss of hearing, loss of limbs and even death.

In addition to the required vaccines, there are a number of vaccines that are recommended for these age groups. Please check with PHHS or the student's medical provider for more information.

The Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services offers these vaccines on a walk-in basis on Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost for each vaccine is dependent upon insurance coverages. For more information about the required vaccines, please visit http://health.mo.gov/living/wellness/immunizations/schoolrequirements.php.
