(COLUMBIA, MO) -
Columbia Police officers responded to 1903 North Providence Road, Probation and Parole, at 12:48 p.m. today in reference to a suspicious package.

Upon officers' arrival they observed a small package wrapped in duct tape and near a pillar outside of the Probation and Parole office. The package appeared to have a fuse hanging from it. The Columbia Fire Department and an explosives detection K-9 officer with the University of Missouri Police Department responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.

Given the minimal size and thickness of the package, available resources were deployed to subdue the package. Following these efforts, the Columbia Fire Department saturated the package with water. The package was deemed not hazardous and the scene was stable by approximately 1:45 p.m.

The Probation and Parole office and surrounding businesses were evacuated during the investigation. Community Service Aides assisted with traffic control while the intersection of Providence Road and Vandiver Drive was temporarily shut down. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the suspicious package being located is on-going.
