<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - For the 37th year, the City of Columbia received an award that represents significant accomplishment in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting. <br /><br />The Accounting Division of the City's Finance Department was awarded with the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA). The award was given for the comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR) from fiscal year 2016.<br /><br />"We are proud to have received the GFOA Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for 37 consecutive years.  This accomplishment is a reflection of the continuing hard work of the accounting staff in the Finance Department,"  Finance Director Michele Nix said.<br /><br />Columbia was one of 4,231 organizations to receive the Certificate of Achievemen
 
 t for Excellence in Financial Reporting. Submissions are judged by GFOA staff and a special review committee comprised of individuals with expertise in public sector financial reporting. According to GFOA, submissions must meet the high standards of the program to receive the award, which includes demonstrating a constructive "spirit of full disclosure" to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the CAFR. <br /><br />According to GFOA, the Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting Program was created in 1954 to encourage and assist state and local governments to go beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles to prepare comprehensive annual financial reports that evidence the spirit of transparency and full disclosure and then to recognize individual governments that succeed in achieving that goal.</div>
