(COLUMBIA, MO) - Svetlana Grobman's photograph titled "The Champion" has been unveiled as this year's Commemorative Poster for the City of Columbia. Unveiled on Wednesday, Sept. 13, the artwork was selected from 50 images submitted by mid-Missouri artists through a jury process.

Grobman is an immigrant from Russia who moved to Columbia in 1990. In Columbia, she received a library science degree from the University of Missouri, and worked at the Columbia Public Library for 26 years. Now retired, Grobman is a freelance writer and photographer. In 2015, she published her memoir, and in 2016, she won first place at the Rural Missouri Snapshot Contest.

Grobman's winning photo is of the iconic burr oak tree.

"Many Columbians know Missouri's oldest and largest burr oak near McBain. Some admire it from the Katy Trail, some drive to it along Burr Oak Road, especially in
the summer when the tree is covered with lush greenery. Yet early in the spring, when the oak stands dark and bare, small purple henbit wildflowers sprout all around it and cover the ground with a colorful blanket as a symbol of spring and the eternal conflict between old and new," Grobman said.

The Commemorative Poster was unveiled Sept. 13 at the Boone County Historical Museum & Galleries. Frank and Michelle Baumstark hosted this year's Celebration of the Arts. Funds raised by the event go toward the Columbia Arts Fund, an arts endowment fund established at the Community Foundation of Central Missouri intended to augment annual funding to arts and culture organizations.

The 2017 Columbia Commemorative Poster, "The Champion," can be purchased for $15 at the City's Office of Cultural Affairs, 300 S. Providence Road. The City's Commemorative Poster is a program of the City of Columbia Office of Cultural Affairs with a sponsorship in
2017 from Commerce Bank.
