<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - <p style="display:inline;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Columbia Public Works announced on Monday, Oct. 30, that the last phase of the Providence Road Improvement Project was completed with the opening of Bingham Road.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"We appreciate the patience of those commuters who have traveled Providence Road during our construction and hope they will realize the importance of the project for not only motorists, but to pedestrians as well," Public Works Director David Nichols said. "Two signalized pedestrian crossings at the new traffic light locations, new islands and medians, and improved ADA-compliant sidewalks should provide a safe crossing and ease to those who need to access the University of Missouri from the west side of Providence."</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The sidewalk on Burnam was also completed and crews plan to have all of the driveways that were affected by the new sidewalk construction repaved by early next week. Minor delays may continue on Burnam. After the project finishes, crews may need a week or two for cleanup and landscaping.</span></p>
<p><strong>Project Description:</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;"> The project improvements included:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>New Traffic Signals:</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Installation of traffic signals along Providence Road at the intersection with Burnam Road and at the intersection with Turner Avenue.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>Traffic Signal Removal:</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Removal of the existing traffic signal along Providence Road at the intersection with Rollins Street.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>New Sidewalk:</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Construction of a sidewalk along the south side of Burnam Road from Birch Road to Providence Road.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>Two Signalized Crosswalks: </strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">Enhanced the crosswalks at the signalized intersections at Turner and Burnam to meet or exceed current standards, including pedestrian signals.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>Southbound Right Turn Lane: </strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">Extension of the southbound right turn lane onto Stadium from Providence Road.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>Intersection Access Improvements: </strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">The intersections of Providence Road with Bingham Road and Kentucky Boulevard were converted to right-in/right-out/left-in. The intersections of Providence Road with Rollins Street and Brandon Road were converted to right-in/right-out.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>Medians:</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Median islands were constructed on Providence Road between Turner Avenue and Burnam.</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The contractor for the project was Sam Gaines Construction. The investment cost was an estimated $3.9 million.</span> <span style="font-weight: 400;">The Columbia City Council initially approved the project on June 3, 2013 after a series of public Interested Parties Meetings beginning in 2008. Construction of the first phase of the project began on May 15 of this year. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"The project was done in several phases so that access to multiple roads would not be closed at the same time during construction</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">," Public Works Construction Supervisor David Fennewald said. "</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">All work on Providence Road itself was done at night to reduce the impact on local traffic. Providence was never closed."</span></p>
