(COLUMBIA, MO) - The City of Columbia will celebrate Geography Awareness Week, Nov. 12-18, and GIS Day on Nov. 15. The City of Columbia has shown innovative application of technology, data collection, geospatial information visualization, and thought leadership through geographic information system (GIS) technology. This is an effort to make the City more transparent and efficient. This is accomplished with user-friendly web maps and applications.

Geography Awareness Week promotes geographic-literacy and education in our schools and communities to improve understanding of the world's geography as it relates to all aspects of our lives. Geography is used everywhere, from crime mapping and homeland security, to environmental protection and healthcare. Students, teachers and citizens across Columbia and across the nation will learn more about the i
nterconnection of human and natural systems that are increasingly important in today's world and in building our future. Each third week of November, students, families and community members focus on the importance of geography by hosting events, and using lessons, games and challenges in the classroom.

GIS Day was first observed 17 years ago, dedicating one day to show how geographic intelligence touches everyone. The explosion of geospatial technology since then has expanded that idea into a global event that demonstrates how far GIS extends into people's lives, and has become a forum for users to showcase their unique GIS accomplishments.

The City encourages curious customers of all ages to check out the interactive resources available on the City's website including: City View, Community Dashboard and the Maps & Apps Directory. City View provides information about property, public service, zoning and natural resources information through a conv
enient web map. The intent of this map is to quickly provide answers to questions about City services. The Community Dashboard allows anyone to explore maps showing planning cases, special events, development, capital projects and code enforcement, throughout the City, and see the growth and change of the Columbia community over time. The Maps & Apps Directory is a great collection of interactive web maps, current and historical PDF maps, and an excellent resource for information on streets, transportation, parks, population, zoning, utilities, the environment and more.

This is the 6th consecutive year Columbia has recognized Geography Awareness Week and GIS Day.
