(COLUMBIA, MO) - On Thursday, November 9th, 2017 at 10:25 PM, Columbia Fire Units were dispatched to 407 Ann St. for a residential structure fire. The first fire crew arrived four minutes later and found a six-unit apartment building with smoke visible from the basement. Fire crews found a fire in the bedroom of a basement unit and made an aggressive interior fire attack. The fire was contained to the bedroom of the involved unit.

Two subjects were in the residence at the time of the fire and were alerted by a smoke alarm. One subject sustained minor burns while attempting to extinguish the fire. The subject received medical treatment on the scene but refused transport to a hospital.

The Columbia Fire Department Fire Marshal's Office investigated the fire. The fire originated in a bedroom of the involved apartment and was c
aused by a portable space heater placed too close to combustibles. Damages are estimated at $10,000.

The Columbia Fire Department would like to remind residents to keep at least three feet clearance from combustibles when using portable space heaters.
