<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - <p style="margin: 6px 0px; display: block; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; color: 1d2129; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: ffffff; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;">Scammers pretending to be with the City of Columbia Utility Customer Service (Water & Light) and AmerenUE are targeting Columbia residents and businesses. The scammers are calling victims and reporting their utilities will be disconnected if the victim does not provide payment over the phone. The set-up appears very legitimate as the scammers provide "claim numbers" and "employee identification numbers." They also 
 
 have an authentic sounding automated phone system which states you have reached "Columbia Utility Customer Services."<span class="text_exposed_show" style="display: inline; font-family: inherit;"> upon call back. Phone numbers that have been associated with this scam are 1-800 numbers so far.</span></p>

<p style="margin: 0px 0px 6px; font-family: inherit;">The City of Columbia and AmerenUE DO NOT telephone citizens asking for payment with debit, credit or green dot cards.</p>
<p style="margin: 6px 0px; font-family: inherit;">Here are some safety tips:</p>
<p style="margin: 6px 0px; font-family: inherit;">1) NEVER give out personal information such as credit card numbers and expiration dates, bank account numbers, dates of birth, or social security numbers to unfamiliar companies or unknown persons.</p>
<p style="margin: 6px 0px; font-family: inherit;"><br />2) Make a phone call to AmerenUE or the City of Columbia to verify the information. A thirty second phone call can save you money. </p>
<p style="margin: 6px 0px; font-family: inherit;"><br />3) If something doesn't seem right, it's not right.</p>
<p style="margin: 6px 0px; font-family: inherit;">If you have information about a fraud, report it to your local law enforcement agency via their non-emergency number. You may contact the City of Columbia at 573-874-7380 if you have questions about your utility billing.</p>
