Sewer construction to close sections of Garth Avenue near Stewart Road Dec. 18

(COLUMBIA, MO) -
In order to connect the new sewer line into the City's existing public sewer, the City of Columbia Sewer Utility and contractor, Tim Harris Excavating, will close Garth Avenue to the north and south of the Stewart Road intersection beginning Monday, Dec. 18. Closure north of Stewart is anticipated to take one week, weather permitting. Stewart Road will remain open to east/west traffic. The northern portion of Garth may be accessed from Broadway.

Phase two of construction on Private Common Collector Elimination (PCCE) project number eight began in November and includes installation of a new sewer line and manhole along Garth Avenue south of Stewart Road. Once this line is connected to the existing gravity sewer located just north of Stewart Road, the contractor will remove individual connections from the private sewer and tie these properties along Garth into the new line. Garth Avenue south of Stewart will remain closed for the remainder of phase two.

The focus of PCCE projects is to remove connections from private sewers which have not been maintained and often experience problems with stoppages, backups and overflows due to deterioration. Replacing private collectors with a City maintained sewer can increase capacity and quality of pipes and reduce instances of inflow, infiltration into the system and overflow into local waterways.

More information on the project can be found in the original press release.

Motorists, nonmotorized transportation users and pedestrians should use caution in the area.
