(COLUMBIA, MO) - On Thursday, December 21st 2017 at 9:56 PM, units from the Columbia Fire Department and Boone County Fire Protection District were dispatched to 5408 Huntley Ct. for a residential structure fire. Units arrived approximately six minutes later and found a small extinguished fire under a bed in a child's bedroom. One adult (age 20) and three juveniles (ages 5, 5 and 17) were home at the time of the fire. Occupants were notified of the fire by smoke alarms sounding and the fire was extinguished prior to the arrival of fire crews. One subject received minor burns to her hand while extinguishing the fire but refused medical care.

The Columbia Fire Marshal's Division responded and conducted a fire investigation. It was determined the origin of the fire was a pillow and was caused by juveniles playing with fire. Damages are estimated at $500.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds citizens to make sure they have operating smoke alarms.
